Language Requirements

Regardless of your major, you will have to fulfill a foreign language requirement - three semesters for a BA or 2 semesters for a BS.  Please keep in mind you need a passing grade of C- or better to advance and complete your language studies. So, it works best if you take your classes consecutively. 

USF offers the following subjects: American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, Filipino, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, and Spanish.

If you are beginning a new language at USF, meaning that you have never studied it before, you should just simply register for the first semester language course. But if you plan to continue studying a language that you have taken before coming to USF, you will need to take a foreign language placement test prior to registration for accurate placement. Students who received 4 or 5 on their AP score place out of the language requirement but are encouraged to pursue their language studies towards a minor or major. 

You can take the following language placement exams online Ð Chinese, Filipino, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Spanish Heritage. Please click on the Placement Test link on the webtrack homepage.  Please note that the results from the French, German, Italian, Spanish and Spanish Heritage placement tests take 2 weeks to record on your account.  All other language placement tests must be taken on campus. 

If you have been raised in a Spanish-speaking environment, then you may be eligible to take Spanish 221. This class will count toward the 3rd semester language requirement. 

And finally, USF offers accelerated courses in Greek, Hebrew, and Latin.  You will take 6 credits per semester.  Your language requirement will be fulfilled upon completion of first and second semester.

If you are a transfer student and have taken language classes before coming to USF, well, you have two options. You can either check your degree evaluation or take the language placement test.
